On Friday two of our maths staff attended a course run by Craig Barton of Mr Barton maths fame. It was based around how we teach problem solving to our students. He has done some amazing research and he has changed his teaching practice based on his findings. His findings show that we cannot ‘teach’ problem solving and has some really interesting ideas based on Cognitive Load Theory.
His findings have generated a lot of discussion and has shown ways in which we can help our students gain knowledge.
The day run by the Thames mathshub was well attended and has given us all food for thought.
