The Leigh UTC held its first open business event of the year on March 8th. Local businesses came together to hear a useful presentation on updates on the forthcoming apprenticeships levy from Malcolm Healey of The Leigh UTC’s apprenticeships partner, SEMTA, www.semta.org.uk

Principal, Steve Leahey, went on to talk about the attributes of students and character development through The Leigh UTC and forthcoming International Baccalaureate Careers Programme learner profiles.

A number of year 13 students shone as they gave short presentations to delegates on their extended project qualifications:

Akeem Rhoden presented his solidworks animation of a wind turbine

Niamh Arklie showed off her electric skateboard project

Oliver Lock displayed his electric guitar

Royal Navy team, Greg Tindell, Lewis Cartmell and Jack Evans spoke about their project and forthcoming national competition aspirations.

Business attendees were most impressed by the students at The Leigh UTC who also joined delegates for business networking at the brunch. Several offers of work experience, mentoring and possible apprenticeships were received as a direct result of the event.

“I would like to thank The Leigh UTC for inviting us to listen to the presentations today. The levy presentation was so insightful and I feel happier about how it all works. You all must be so proud of your students; they gave brilliant presentations and are a credit to the Academy.”- Sarah Doyle, HR Partner, Colorcon
