Qualifications
The Leigh UTC offers students aged over 16 three different progression pathways to choose from.
These are for students who have gained at least five GCSEs at grade 9-4 (including maths and English). All pathways involve studying one of our specialisms as a level 3 course with each route having a different bias towards professional (more academic) and technical (more hands-on) activities.
Retake options are available for GCSE maths and English language.
Pathway 1 – A Levels
This route is studied over two years and is aimed at students who want to take A-levels in maths, a science subject, as well as their specialism. It can lead to studying in higher education or employment or a higher apprenticeship.
Choose 2 A-Levels from:
- Maths
- Physics
- Biology
- Chemistry
and choose either
BTEC Level 3 Engineering
or
BTEC Level 3 Computer Science (equivalent to two A-levels)
and
Extended project qualification (AS)
Pathway 2 – IBCP
Choose two IB Diplomas:
- English Literature and Language
- Maths Studies
- Design Technology
- IT in a Global Society
- Visual Art
- Environmental Systems and Societies
and choose either
BTEC Level 3 Engineering
or
BTEC Level 3 Computer Science (equivalent to two A-levels)
All students will complete a reflective project and also study a core programme to enhance their professional skills
Pathway 3 – Tech Bacc
This route is studied over two years and has a more vocational bias. It can lead to studying in higher education, for example, at a university, employment or a higher apprenticeship
Choose from:
BTEC level 3 diploma in engineering (equivalent to two A-levels)
or
BTEC level 3 National diploma in Computer Science (equivalent to two A-levels)
and
Level 3 core maths programme
and
Extended project (AS)
All sixth form students will have the opportunity to study a range of professional qualifications at level 3.
