This week The Leigh UTC welcomed two engineers from AECOM, Georgia and Harriette.
They came to speak to our students about studying and working in the field of Engineering. Their particular specialism is designing and structurally refurbishing bridges, which is classed as Civil Engineering. They are currently working on a project based in Dubai for a new bridge.
Georgia and Harriette first gave a presentation to all year groups. This presentation gave students glimpses of how vast the field of engineering is and gave a few specific examples of the different areas available. They encouraged students to think about the different routes that were available and advocated a year in industry if students chose to go to University.
After this they specifically spoke with Post 16 Engineers in depth about the different pathways available and answered questions in more detail about their jobs and what it is like being a female engineer.
Our students left with ‘food for thought’ about their chosen routes as speaking with Georgia and Harriette opened their minds to other possibilities.
At the end of question time Harriette and Georgia participated in a Podcast. They were interviewed by Morgan Stansell and Loui Ringer for their BBC news report.
