SEN Report

At The Leigh UTC we aim to develop a strong focus on progress and embedding a culture of high expectations for all. The first response to pupils who have or may have SEN is high-quality, differentiated teaching. A teacher with a good understanding of the young person, supported by the SENCO, should set clear goals, to review progress made.

Within the UTC we can make provision for most kinds of frequently occurring Special Educational Needs. We have Higher Level Teaching Assistant and Learning Mentor who support our SEND students both inside and outside the classroom. Further two support staff members have been trained to deliver Emotional Literacy Support. We run additional interventions for Literacy, Numeracy, Dyslexia, ASD, Cognition and Learning.

As a member of The Leigh Academies Trust, the Leigh UTC is able to extend the support by engaging Educational Psychologists, Speech, Language and Communication support.

On entry, we run standardised tests for all students to set baseline data and then continue to monitor their academic progress six times a year. This involves the use of a range of assessments with all students at least once a module.

We ensure that all teachers and support staff who work with the young persons are aware of the support to be provided and the teaching approaches to be used through carefully tailored professional development sessions delivered by SLT, external consultants and shared services in the Trust.

The role of a parent is crucial to the success of our students and we like to receive their inputs regularly. While we run the ‘open door’ policy, we also organise parents’ information evenings to exchange views and build network of parents.
