The SEND Team is responsible for the provision for students identified with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) across the Academy. The SEND Team supports students and teachers to ensure that our students develop the skills and knowledge to become confident lifelong learners. In addition to the team members listed below, we utilise a team of Learning Mentors and Teaching Assistants to support students through targeted interventions and in-class support.

How does The Leigh UTC support students with SEND?
The first step to support students with SEND is through high quality teaching. The Leigh UTC follows Quality First Teaching principles to ensure all students are supported in all lessons. All teachers and support staff receive training and professional development to help them develop their classroom practice. These development opportunities are led by the Academy’s Senior Leadership Team. All teaching staff attend training in specific educational needs led by the SENDCo and wider SEND Team, including SEND personnel from across the Leigh Academies Trust. In addition, our Student Services Managers meet regularly with their pastoral teams to share updates and strategies to support individual students.
In all lessons, teachers are responsible for supporting students through differentiation and scaffolding and specialised equipment can be provided where appropriate. There are times when students may require additional intervention to aid learning and these bespoke programmes are planned, actioned and reviewed in line with the Graduated Approach.
