Humanities Year 9 Home Learning

Following our studies on America during the 1920s, students in Year 9 have been learning about the conditions in Britain during the 1920s. Students were surprised to find out that following the First World War, Britain was struggling and many people were living in poverty.
Below are some great examples of the writing students have submitted:

Life for wealthy people in the UK was very luxurious and easy. This can be seen in Source B where many wealthy people are on a street outside John Lewis wearing fur clothes and other smart and expensive clothing. We know that at this time only 3% of the population was upper class and 25% were middle class, leaving most of the population of Britain poor and hungry and unable to afford these goods that people would easily be able to afford today. This shows wealthy people in Britain lived a good life.

However life for poor people in Britain wasn’t easy, clean or enjoyable. We can see evidence of this in Source E where a mother and her children are standing in what looks like a dump, with rubbish all over the muddy floor. They are wearing scruffy clothes and many of the kids have a frown rather than a smile. We know that many families couldn’t make enough money to even eat or provide for themselves. This shows life for poorer people in Britain was very depressing and rough.

Life for wealthy people in Britain in 1901 was a life of luxury and ease. This can be seen in Source B where we can see well dressed men and women near a John Lewis store. We know at this time rich people were considered to be upper class and had lots of money and therefore able to live great lives. People were very proud around this time as they were able to buy so many goods made in factories as well as imported from the British Empire. This shows that life for wealthy people during time was great and that they had an amazing lifestyle.

However life for poor people in 1901 was very much a miserable life. This can be seen in Source E where we see a whole family living in what looks like a very old building with no proper flooring outside the house. They are all trying to look happy with the way they are living but really they are living a horrible life. We know this because families back then did not even have enough money to get by and were living on a very, very low budget to feed their families. They would have had to have paid for their own medical care and many were unable to do this so often remained ill. This shows that life for poor people was unpleasant and would have been very miserable .

Life for wealthy people in Britain in 1901 was comfortable as they were usually well fed, properly clean and well clothed. This can be seen in Source B where we can see wealthy people dressed in expensive clothes walking along a high street next to John Lewis which is an expensive shop even today! This shows that life for wealthy people was more expensive but easy for them as they had more money to buy the things they wanted.

However, life for poor people in Britain in 1901 was much more difficult. Source A shows a family with many kids living in a small house with only broken toys. We can see the family of seven sitting down around a small table and the mother looks like she is fixing the kids broken toys, probably because she is unable to buy new toys to replace them. This shows life for poor people in Britain was difficult as people had little to no money to buy the things they needed to live a happier life.
