Middle Years Programme in Language and Literature

Three Leigh UTC students are shown working on laptop computers together at a desk.

Dear Parents/Carers,.

I am writing to congratulate your child in Year 9 on having completed the Middle Years Programme in Language and Literature.

As you know, Year 10 students will be entered in the core GCSE subjects, English Language and English Literature. The examination board that is used for both these qualifications is AQA.

To assist in preparations and to promote maximum potential for progress in your child’s GCSE subjects, I would advise that the texts for the English Literature GCSE are purchased and read at least once by candidates before the course starts in September.

A ‘quick read’ over the summer will provide access to primary content knowledge, such as important characters and plot, which will permit teachers to address analysis with classes as soon as possible. Below are suggested links and ISBN numbers of books under study.

Blood Brothers, by Willy Russell ISBN:978-0413767707

A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens  ISBN: 978-1840227567

These links (and links to productions) will also be placed in the Year 9 Study Room on your child’s Google Classroom.

With congratulations for making the transition in a really tough year, I wish you and your family a safe and restful summer break.

The English team looks forward to starting the exciting next chapter with you in September.

Kind Regards,

Mrs M Hook
