Year 13 Teacher Assessment Grades

Dear Parents/Carers, 

 

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing with an update on Year 13 Teacher Assessed Grades, which are replacing A Level and BTEC exams this year. 

Ofqual has released the outcome of their consultation (which can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/consultation-on-how-gcse-as-and-a-level-gradesshould-be-awarded-in-summer-2021)

The headlines are as follows and an infographic is enclosed with this letter which you might find helpful:

  • Teachers will be asked to assess their students’ performance, only on the content that has been delivered to them, to determine the grade each student should receive. 
  • Work completed throughout the course can be considered as evidence. 
  • We envisage to have completed all the assessments by Module 5 which will be followed by internal and external quality assurance. The deadline for submission of teacher assessed grades is the 18th June 2021. 
  • Students should continue with their coursework units for their BTEC courses all the way through to Module 6.
  • Exam boards are preparing a package of support, including previously unreleased questions, which we are planning to use to form part of their evidence for awarding particular grades to students. 
  • There will be internal and external quality assurance processes in place to ensure fairness and parity. 
  • Results Day for Year 13 will be 10th August 2021.
  • Students will have a right of appeal. They can appeal to their school if they feel there has been an administration/procedural error. They can appeal to the exam board (through their school) if they feel their result is incorrect. Schools will then be required to submit their evidence for the teacher assessed grade and exam boards will review. 

We are now in the process of working with Leigh Academies Trust and Year 13 teaching staff at The Leigh UTC to consider what pieces of work might go into a student’s ‘Portfolio of evidence’ in each subject. We will, of course, ensure that we follow a robust process to put together teacher assessed grades for our students. 

It is important to note that we do not yet know when Year 13 students’ final day in school will be this year so please be cautious around booking holidays etc. 

We are also very conscious of the need to provide them with continued excellent pastoral care as they negotiate this very challenging year. Please be reassured that we understand the pressures they may be feeling and will guide them sensitively through the coming months. Teachers and tutors are already doing an excellent job to ensure that all the students are supported through the whole process.
