The Leigh UTC was honoured to welcome John Boumphrey, Vice President and UK Country Manager for Amazon, and Lord Baker, former Secretary of State for Education and co-founder of the Baker Dearing Trust, for a distinguished visit on Wednesday 25th June 2025.
They were joined by Simon Beamish, Chief Executive of Leigh Academies Trust, and Richard Taylor, Deputy Chief Executive, for a day that highlighted the power of technical education to transform lives and strengthen communities.
The visit provided an invaluable opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue around the evolving role of education in a modern economy. This conversation was particularly timely as it coincided with The Leigh UTC’s STEAM Week, during which Year 9 students proudly presented their community based projects. Their work demonstrated not only impressive creativity and teamwork, but also their growing confidence in applying real world learning to tangible outcomes.
Guests were also introduced to four Year 13 students from The Leigh UTC, each of whom has secured a prestigious degree level apprenticeship with Amazon, a testament to their dedication, as well as to the strength of our industry aligned curriculum.

Hospitality on the day was delivered by a talented Year 11 student from The Leigh UTC, who recently completed a Level 2 vocational course in Hospitality and Catering, showcasing the professionalism and skills that lie at the heart of our practical learning pathways.
The event served to reaffirm the shared mission of all parties in delivering a high quality, industry focused curriculum that equips young people with the employability and leadership skills needed to contribute to sustained economic growth locally, nationally, and globally.
The Leigh UTC remains steadfast in its commitment to nurturing the next generation of STEM professionals. Through deep collaboration between business and education, they continue to foster an enterprising culture where innovation, partnership, and ambition drive students to become not just work ready but future ready.
Amazon Vice President and Country Manager for UK and Ireland John Boumphrey Commented:
“Having witnessed the transformative power of apprenticeships at Amazon, I’ve seen countless talented young people forge successful, fulfilling careers through hands-on learning experiences. That’s why we’re teaming up with the Baker Dearing Educational Trust and UTC network – to give more young people opportunities to develop their skills and build confidence for the workplace.”
